Chandigarh: Defence expert, Lieutenant General (retired) PN Hoon, on Saturday said that Zaki-ur-Rehman Lakhvi is an international terrorist and no one can or should release him at the moment.
Lakhvi is accused of planning, financing and executing the Mumbai terror attacks in 2008. On Friday, the Islamabad High Court declared Lakhvi’s detention as ‘illegal’ and ordered his release, which sparked off widespread condemnation in India.
India has in unison said that Pakistan must reconsider its stand and said it is Pakistan’s responsibility to take all legal measures to ensure that he doesn’t come out of jail.
Minister of State for Home Affair Kiren Rijiju criticized Islamabad High Court’s decision to release Lakhvi declaring his detention “illegal”. He said despite having all the proof, Pakistan agencies did not present it to the court.
An influential US Senator also recently criticized Pakistan for failing to contain extremist groups. He asked to either hand over Mumbai attack mastermind Zaki-ur-Rehman Lakhvi to India or present him to the International Criminal Court in the Hague for crimes against humanity. Chairman of the powerful US House Foreign Relations Committee Ed Royce, who is leading a bipartisan congressional delegation, without naming Lakhvi, said that Pakistan must bring to justice Lashkar-e-Taiba terrorists involved in the 26/11 Mumbai attack case and wondered how Lakhvi is taking visitors instead of facing action.
