The Delhi government will put a ban on sale, purchase and storage of all forms of chewable tobacco from today. The ban has been brought to check the growing menace of oral cancer. However no such ban will be enforced on cigarettes.
The Aam Aadmi Party-led Delhi government had banned chewing tobacco or ‘gutka’, in all its forms. Enforcement teams of Delhi Police as well as the Health Department have been asked to conduct surprise checks across the city to ensure that the ban is implemented. Tobacco companies in India have to stamp health warnings across 85 percent of the surface of cigarette packs and other products.
