Bangladesh Faces Strike as 1971 War Criminal Kamaruzzaman hanged

Dhaka: Security was tight around the jail in Dhaka where Islamist opposition leader Muhammad Kamaruzzaman was executed. He was hanged on Saturday, days after a court rejected his final appeal.

He’d refused to beg the president for a pardon. Kamaruzzaman was convicted of genocide and torture of civilians during the 1971 war that saw Bangladesh break away from Pakistan.

His party, Jamaat-e-Islami, issued a statement accusing the Bangladesh government of taking political revenge.

It’s declared Sunday a day of prayer and called a general strike for Monday.

Paramilitary troops have been deployed across the country to stem any sign of protest.
