Purnia: Unseasonal rain accompanied by hail storm in various district of Bihar has killed over 32 people, injuring more than 80 people in on Tuesday, uprooting several thousand trees, damaging power lines and destroying thousands of huts and standing crops of maize, wheat and pulses. The so called ‘Kal Baisakhi’ or ‘nor’westers’ storm started from Nepal side and gradually impacted various border districts of Bihar.

The maximum number of 25 deaths were reported from Purnia district, while six have died in Madhepura and one in Madhubani. In total, 10 districts including Sitamarhi, Darbhanga and Bhagalpur have been affected by the rain-cum-storm.
Most of the deaths were caused by tin roofs blown off of poor people’s huts by winds reaching 100 kilometers per hour (60 miles per hour).

Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar on Wednesday said that relief work is underway and information of the total damage is being collected
He added that he would personally take stock of the situation through an aerial survey. A compensation of Rs.4 lakh each has been sanctioned for the next of kin of the victims, media reports said.
