Nasim Zaidi has today taken charge of office as Chief Election Commissioner. Zaidi will be sole member of the three-member poll body which has two vacant posts of election commissioners.
The move came after CEC H.S. Brahma relinquished the charge of the top post of the nation’s poll panel yesterday.
Zaidi said that he will ensure free and fair polling and try to uphold the office of Election Commission of India as done by his predecessors. He will be the CEC till July, 2017, when he turns 65. An election commissioner can remain in office for six years or till he attains the age of 65 years. Dr. Zaidi is an IAS officer from Uttar Pradesh cadre of the 1976 batch.
