President Pranab Mukherjee and Vice President Hamid Ansari on Monday extended warm greetings to fellow citizens on the eve of Vaisakhi.
“On the joyous occasion of Vaisakhi, I extend my warm greetings and good wishes to all fellow citizens, especially to those who are engaged in cultivation and farming,” President Mukherjee said.
“May this celebration of nature’s bounty inspire us to strengthen our contribution to the nation’s prosperity and remind us of the invaluable service rendered to the nation by our farmers and agricultural labourers,” he added.
Vice President Mohammad Hamid Ansari also greeted the people of country on the joyous occasion of Vaisakhi, Vishu, Puthandu, Masadi, Vaishkhadi and Bahag Bihu.
Vaisakhi is a festival celebrated in the Punjab region. The festival coincides with other festivals celebrated on the first day of Vaisakh, in some regions of the Indian Subcontinent such as Pohela Boishakh, the Bengali New Year or Bohag Bihu of Assam or Puthandu, the Tamil New Year.
Vaisakhi is especially important for the Sikh community as it marks the establishment of the Khalsa. More recently, this festival is also celebrated around the world by the Sikh diaspora.
The festival is also celebrated by Hindus and Buddhists for different reasons including the start of a new year. People in the Punjab Region regard Vaisakhi as a harvest festival and the Punjabi new year.
