Ankit Keshri was a former Bengal Under-19 cricketer/batsman who died on Monday after encountering an accident on the cricket field last Friday.
Keshri was the captain of the Bengal Under-19 team two years ago in Cooch-Behar Trophy and was among the India Under-19 probables list for the 2014 Youth World Cup in the United Arab Emirates. He was also playing for Bengal A (Under-23) in the CK Nayudu Trophy.
The 20-year-old talented cricketer had collided with his teammate Sourabh Mondal while attempting a catch and had been rushed to the hospital after he stopped breathing briefly. He eventually died of a cardiac arrest.
His death was condoled by many including Sachin Tendulkar. “Saddened by the demise of Ankit Keshri. A promising career aborted by an unfortunate incident on the field. May God give strength to his family and friends to cope with this loss,†Tendulkar wrote on his Facebook page.
A controversy has arisen over why he was shifted from AMRI Hospital to Nightingale Hospital. Doctors of AMRI have expressed disappointment over the way he was taken away from the hospital, considering the superior facilities at AMRI. Keshri’s father Raj Kumar was inconsolable and said: “I don’t know why he was shifted to Nightingale. We always wanted better treatment and his East Bengal coach and officials did all the formalities (of signing the risk bond).”
