Widespread Power Outage hits White House and Washington DC Area

Washington: Widespread power outages hit the Washington DC on Tuesday. Officials say there’s no indication of malicious activity behind the outages that affected much of the Washington area including the White House.

White House Spokesman Josh Earnest said, “Things are slowly but surely returning to normal here at the White House complex.”

The State Department’s daily news briefing was also interrupted by the outage forcing the spokesperson to use a flashlight on her cell phone.

State Department Spokesperson Marie Harf said, “Thank you, come get your recorders.”

Four Smithsonian museums had to be evacuated after the power went out.

“It’s really, really hot. I guess the air conditioning is not functioning and half of the elevators are not working.”, a museum visitor said.

The outage also affected a U.S. Postal Service ceremony where Oprah Winfrey was speaking for the dedication of the Maya Angelou stamp.

The University of Maryland’s campus at College Park had to be closed Tuesday afternoon because of the outages.

Pepco, the area’s power company says the outage stemmed from a dip in voltage because of transmission line trouble.
