After 42 years in coma, Mumbai Nurse Aruna Shanbaug passes away

New Delhi, May 18 (ANI): Former King Edward Memorial (KEM) Hospital nurse Aruna Shanbaug, who was in coma for the last 42 years passed away on Monday.

She was 68. Shanbaug remained in a vegetative state for 42 years, after she was raped by a hospital sweeper in November 27, 1973. Reportedly, Shanbaug was suffering from Pneumonia and doctors had put her on ventilator last week.

In March 2011, the Supreme Court had rejected the petition filed by former journalist and author Pinki Virani, seeking mercy killing (euthanasia) for Aruna Shanbaug. The plea was even opposed by the KEM hospital’s management and nursing staff.
