Cancel Interim Bail of Salman Khan, Petition requests Supreme Court

Mumbai: A Special Leave petition has been filed in Supreme Court seeking cancellation of interim bail to Bollywood actor Salman Khan by Bombay High Court. It is not clear who filed the petition, the court will take it up for hearing on Friday, the same day High Court would decide his bail plea.

The Petition alleges that Bombay High Court hurriedly decided Salman’s matter and his bail plea got out of turn hearing. Salman Khan has been sentenced to five years in jail. He was held guilty of all eight charges in the 2002 hit-and-run case.

Salman Khan was on Wednesday granted two days interim bail by High Court after Khan’s lawyer moved High Court for the bail application. The court granted two days interim bail since the judgment copy was not submitted in time in the court.

Earlier in the day, Salman Khan was handed out a five-year jail term by a Mumbai sessions court after being found guilty of all charges in the 2002 hit-and-run case. The judgment in the 13-year-old case has seen many twists and turns. The case took a curious turn when Salman’s driver Ashok Singh told the court in March that he was driving the car which ran over people sleeping on a pavement. However, the prosecution questioned the driver’s silence over the last 12 years and accused him of lying under oath. Salman is charged under Section 304 Part II (culpable homicide not amounting to murder) which carries a maximum penalty of 10 years in prison.
