Andhra Pradesh Heat Wave Death Toll crosses 1400

Visakhapatnam, Hyderabad, East Godavari, May 28 (ANI): Over 1000 people died in Andhra Pradesh alone due to intense heat wave, officials said.

Heat wave has claimed over 1400 lives in the country according to local media. The death toll in the worst affected states of Andhra Pradesh and Telangana is more than double the toll from a shorter hot spell there last year, officials said, with most of those killed elderly or labourers suffering sunstroke or dehydration.

The acute weather conditions have also resulted in frequent power cuts. Government hospitals in the state too could not offer any respite to its patients as long snarls of power cuts were witnessed there too.

Patients complained that authorities were ignoring their plight and were doing nothing to restore electricity. Authorities have cancelled doctors’ leave and advised people not to head outside in the middle of the day to avoid the worst of the heat.
