“La Tete Haute” – or “Standing Tall” – follows a juvenile delinquent finding his way through the French justice system.
A sombre start to the two week cinema showpiece – but one French acting legend Catherine Deneuve says is in tune with the mood not just in France, but also across the continent.
Actress, Catherine Deneuve, said, “I think the fact they chose this film to open the festival is also an answer from the Festival to a year that has been quite difficult in Europe and especially in France.”
Deneuve plays a judge involved in the cases with the film’s protagonist, Malony.
The story chimes in on sentiment in France following attacks on a satirical magazine and Jewish supermarket earlier this year.
Director, Emmanuelle Bercot, said “The young men who committed these attacks had a very difficult childhood that is similar to the route followed by some children I saw in judges’ offices during all the hearings I attended and in a way they went to the same kind of centres that Malony goes to in the film.”
The 68th Cannes Film Festival runs until May 24.
