Michael Caine bring Youth to Cannes, 50 years after Alfie

Michael Caine made a triumphant return to the Cannes film festival on Wednesday (May 20), drawing big laughs from journalists and fans in the news conference for “Youth”.

Oscar-winning filmmaker Paolo Sorrentino’s film stars Caine and Harvey Keitel as two old friends holidaying in the foothills of the Alps who know their days are limited and decide to face the future together.

“Youth” also stars Jane Fonda as an ageing actress, Rachel Weisz as the daughter of Caine’s character, and Paul Dano as an actor researching his latest role.

The film marks Caine’s return to the film festival, nearly 50 years after he brought his classic movie “Alfie” to the French Riviera.

The star joked that he hadn’t been back because he didn’t win anything the last time he came. Caine’s anecdotes from his illustrious career came thick and fast during an entertaining news conference.

“Youth” is one of 19 films in competition for the Palme d’Or, which will be handed out on Sunday (May 24).
