Rahul Gandhi attacks RSS, gets relief from SC in Criminal Defamation Case

New Delhi: In a relief for Congress Vice President Rahul Gandhi, the Supreme Court on Thursday stayed a proceeding against him in a criminal defamation case.

The defamation case was filed before a trial court in Maharashtra for linking Mahatama Gandhi’s assassination with RSS. Gandhi had allegedly blamed Rashtriya Swayamsewak Sangh (RSS) for the assassination of Mahatma Gandhi.

The court also agreed to hear Rahul’s plea challenging the constitutional validity of criminal defamation law under Section 499 and 500 of Indian Penal Code which makes defamation an offence punishable with up to two-year jail term.

Rahul submitted that criminal defamation law is a colonial legacy and it has no place in a democratic country.
