Social Media has taken to storm about the mysterious Dharamshala gang rape incident which reportedly took place at Dharamsala Postgraduate Government College last Friday, 15 May 2015.
The victim was a student of the college and a Police complaint was lodged by the Principal after protests by local student bodies.
Nothing much is known either about the victim or the accused, while rumour mills are rife and several stories are circulating in the social media.
A Report says that the accused is a relative of a high-profile politician, and thus authorities are trying to suppress the news about incident.
Another report said that injured girl was admitted to the Tanda medical college, however the college authorities also denied it.
The police have registered an FIR under Sections 354 and 509 of IPC. Police have also announced an award of Rs 25,000 for providing information about the alleged crime. Police have also formed an SPecial Investigation Team (SIT) headed by Inspector General of Police (North).
Members of Organizations like ABVP, SFI and VHP have been protesting in the town for past 3-4 days and have threatened a state-wide agitation if the culprits are not nabbed by May 24.
The Role of College Principal is also being questioned. According to reports, the Principal had been earlier saying that no such incident had happened. Later he said that he had heard the rumours of gang rape. When several Girl student gheraoed him he changed his stand and agreed to file a Police Complaint.
In his complaint to the police, the principal maintained that the sister of a student of the college came to her and reported that her sister had been molested and the police should inquire into the incident. However, he failed to recollect the name of the girl or her sister.
Former BJP Minister Kishan Kapoor questioned if a woman had come to Principal’s office reporting the incident, why didn’t he take quick action giving the seriousness to the the matter? He demanded a CBI enquiry into the sexual assault case.
It is also being alleged that the “victim” had earlier approached a college teacher, who was also the chairperson of the college’s sexual harassment committee, alleging that a youth had sexually harassed her. However, instead to taking a serious action, she chose to ignore it.
Kapoor also criticized the statement of local MLA and minister Sudhir Sharma, who had called for a strict action against those sharing the incident on the social media.
The police have circulated two mobile numbers, 94185-88014 and 94184-90987, on which any information related to the Sexual Assault can be given to ASP Shalini Agnihotri and ASP Pankaj Sharma.
