Viswanathan Anand’s mother Sushila Viswanathan passes away at 79

Sushila Viswanathan, mother of five-time world chess champion Viswanathan Anand passed away in Chennai on Wednesday. She was 79.

Viswanathan Anand was taught how to play chess by his mother from age six. She was a chess/film/club aficionado and an influential socialite. His father, Viswanathan Iyer, is a retired General Manager of Southern Railways, he studied in Jamalpur Bihar.

Viswanathan Anand was born on 11 December 1969 at Mayiladuthurai, Tamil Nadu. Shortly thereafter, his family moved to Madras (now Chennai), where he grew up. . He has an elder brother, Shivakumar who is a manager at Crompton Greaves in India and an elder sister Anuradha who is a professor at the University of Michigan.
