Mumbai Auto Drivers complain losses despite Re. 1 Fare Hike

Mumbai, June 25 (ANI): Despite the government’s decision to increase fares of autorickshaws and taxis in Mumbai, the drivers are unhappy as they say hike by rupee 1 will only bring losses to them.

Mumbai Metropolitan Regional Transport Authority (MMRTA) had earlier this month taken the decision to hike the minimum fare of CNG (compressed natural gas) fitted autos from rupees 17 to 18 and different price for autos running on other fuel. The fare for black and yellow taxis was to increase from rupees 21 to 22 ($ 0.34) and rupees 26 to 28 for other cabs.

An autorickshaw driver, Intejaar Ali said on Thursday the fare hike will not bring any profits to him as he will have to shell out thousands of rupees for a new meter. The process of re-calibration of meters is to start on Thursday. The fares have been revised for the second time in less than a year.

The taxi drivers are also worried as they believe the commuters would prefer sharing cabs provided by local unregistered companies as it would cost them less.
