Madras Rains 2015: NDRF steps up rescue and relief efforts

Chennai, Dec 05 (ANI): While rain showing little sign of subsiding in Tamil Nadu, the National Disaster Response Force(NDRF) has stepped up its rescue and relief operations in Chennai. As per the recent reports, the water level has also started receding in certain parts of Madras/Chennai.

Despite combined rescue efforts by the military and civilian emergency services, help is yet to reach many areas. Many people have spent days stranded on rooftops since more than 345 mm (14 inches) of rain fell over 24 hours on December 01 in Chennai.

Military helicopters dropped food to residents stranded on rooftops and the defence ministry doubled to 4,000 the number of soldiers deployed to help the rescue effort. Meanwhile, a government school in Nandamabakkam has turned as temporary homes to many people who have been displaced due to flood.
