Buddhists celebrate unique ‘Kathin Chibor Dan’ festival

Jorhat, Nov 04 (ANI): Hundreds of Buddhist congregated in Tripura’s historical monastery, ‘Venuban Vihar’, to participate in the 40th ‘kathin chibor dan’ festival, one of the main religious festivals of the Buddhist community. The festival is celebrated throughout the world within one month of the conclusion of ‘Prabarana Purnima’, the full moon day of the Hindu month of Ashwini. Large numbers of Buddhists thronged to seek blessings of Lord Buddha for peace and prosperity during the festival. During old times, devotees weaved and dyed the clothes themselves before donating it to a monk. This signified sacrifice, through which one can achieve salvation. Devotees taking part in the celebrations said they wanted to pray for peace among mankind this year. In Buddhism, donating robes to monks is believed to be the highest sacrifice. The festival highlights the importance of sacrifice in life and hence the Buddhist devotees offer prayers and donate generously. The devotees also lighted candles, offered prayers and donated books, pens, notebooks and tied sacred threads to ‘kalpataru’ or wishing trees, which they believe would fulfill their wishes.
