Cherry farming gaining popularity in Himachal Pradesh

Shimla (Himachal Pradesh) June 27 (ANI): Cherry production is gaining popularity in north Indian state of Himachal Pradesh as a profitable alternative to apple. Keeping in mind the health concerns and the booming demand for organic products, farmers are switching to organic cultivation of cherries. On the other hand, apple cultivation is entirely based on chemicals. Narkanda, Kandyali, Rampur and Rohru are among the biggest producers of cherry in the state. On an average, Himachal produces over 500 metric ton of cherries but in this season the production is expected to reach 1,500 metric ton. Himachal Pradesh, popularly known as the ‘apple bowl’ of north India, now seems to be heading for the ‘cherry bowl’ tag.
