Darjeeling continues to boil as strike enters day 8

Darjeeling, June 19 (ANI): Stray incidents of violence continued to erupt in Darjeeling and nearby areas on Monday. The protests have had a crushing impact on Darjeeling’s economy, with the tourism industry taking a major hit as the tourists were asked to return to their home. The shutdown, which disrupted normal life in the hills, was called following raids at the premises connected at Gorkha Janmukti Morcha (GJM) chief Bimal Gurung and some other leaders. The GJM announced an indefinite strike from last Monday encompassing Darjeeling and Kalimpong districts and the Dooars protesting against WB CM Mamata’s decision to make Bengali language compulsory in state-run schools. The strike was called even after the Chief Minister assured that the new rule would not be imposed in the hill districts.
