Four-day ‘fertility festival’ begins in Guwahati

Guwahati (Assam), June 23 (ANI): Thousands of devotees gathered at Kamakhya Temple in Assam, as the four-day long ‘Ambubachi’ or fertility fair began on Thursday. The fair is the celebration of the yearly menstruation course of the Hindu temple’s presiding deity, goddess Kamakhya. The main shrine remains closed for four days, during which hundreds of saffron robed and ash-smeared ‘sadhus’ or Hindu holy men gather at the temple premises and practice occult to draw more powers. The fair is popular among both devotees and tourists who stand in beelines to worship the deity. The temple does not have any statue or iconographic representation of the presiding deity.
