Amritsar’s once famous ‘Tonga cart’ now fading away from streets

Amritsar (Punjab), Sep 25 (ANI): ‘Tonga’, a traditional means of transport for the people of Amritsar, is now fading away due to the modern means of transportation available in the state. 25 years ago around 450 ‘Tongas’ were seen oscillating on the roads of the city but now a mere 22 to 25 ‘tongas’ can be seen plying on the roads. There was a time when ‘tonga’ was spotted on almost every road of this vastly visited city. But now, the situation is such that the ‘tongas’ are just seen moving on the stretch from Sheran Wala Gate to areas near Golden Temple. Though, hard work is still in plenty for the ‘tongawalas’ but the returns are far too less. It is a struggle for survival for those in jobs, who start at around 6:00 in morning and continue it for almost 12 hours.
