Started decades ago by United Nations, every year November 25 is observed as International Day for Elimination of Violence against Women. However, in practice, the use of power is considered pre-condition to violence, while verbal assault leading to the similar conditions as above is often ignored, Verbal Abuse is one of the most cruel form of violence that breaks confidence and makes her life worse. In fact, verbal abuse related psychological torture is one of the leading cause of depression and suicides across the world. In India, verbal abusing is something every woman has faced at least once in her life, be it due to her body shape, skin color or her other bodily features.
To raise the cause of Women facing Verbal Abuse and Violence, ace singer from Kolkata, Soumita Saha has started a campaign. “Abuse and Violence is something none of us are unacquainted with. Irrespective of gender we all have faced the trauma of abuse and violence. It often starts with body-shaming and later her every trait is taken to pieces. It starts with waves of advice and trucks loaded with expert opinion. If you do not surrender to the preconceived state, the society has supposed you to be, it would make your life miserable, finally turning into verbal abuse and violence”, says the Nisarga Madhuri singer.
Speaking of how cruel the abuse can be, the songbird recalls, “Travelling in public transport, I came across a lady who was talking loud over phone. She had come after offering prayers to Goddess for granting a daughter in law of milky while complexion”. If this type of mentality prevails and women are judged by their skin color, those with dark complexion would definitely face abuses and violence.
Soumita has been tirelessly campaigning against this mental state of society which reduces woman to mere objects, which is often body shamed, abuse and violated due to a plethora of reasons. She has used her social media fan following, her music videos to end this discrimination. In past one week, she has been effortlessly raising the cause of every form of abuse and violence against women.
