Centre’s amendment in POCSO Act receives mixed reaction

Jabalpur/Lucknow/New Delhi, Apr 21 (ANI): The Union Cabinet on Saturday introduced an amendment in POCSO Act to award death sentence to rapists of children below 12 years of age. The Ordinance has received mixed reactions across political parties. Senior Advocate and senior Congress leader Salman Khurshid said, “Government should contemplate its decision. We need to address the root cause of such crimes as there’s a limit to which judiciary can help.” Meanwhile, Samajwadi Party leader Juhi Singh said, “The centre has not made any prosecution wing, nor has used Nirbhaya Fund so how can they award punishment in such a state The law would be only as much effective as its implementation.” However, Bharatiya Janata Party Leader Subramanian Swamy hailed the Centre’s decision and said, “If a person rape he cannot be a juvenile and he should be treated as an adult and punishment should be stricter. They should get death sentence.”’
