Beas (Punjab), May 17 (ANI): A large number of dead fish were found floating in Beas on Thursday after black treacle (Molasses) from a sugar factory leaked into the river. Residents noticed the dead fishes in the river and informed the authorities. Black treacle leakage also changed the colour of the river water to rust brown. “Biochemical oxygen demand(BOD) of water decreased reducing availability of oxygen. Leakage plugged,ordered for closure of mill”, said Amritsar Deputy Commissioner Kamaldeep Singh Sangha. Fresh water from the Pong Dam was released into Beas to flush out the pollutants. Authorities have also issued a warning in the area to not to eat or sell the dead fish.
