International Singer Soumita Saha has extended her support to the 8th National Animal Rights Day (NARD) to be organized on Sunday, June 3. It is an annual day observed across multiple countries around the world on the first Sunday of June every year, for the purpose of showing love and respect to the billions of nonhuman animals killed by humans for their greed and pleasure. The Event is marked by the slogan, “OUR PLANET. THEIRS TOO”.
On this day, special events are held across major cities across the world. In India, it would be observed in Mumbai, Udaipur and Dharamshala. Globally it would be organized in several cities including Los Angeles, San Francisco, Seattle, Denver New York, Dallas, Miami, Cleveland, Phoenix, Portland, Toronto, Victoria, Montreal, Paris, Frankfurt, Perth, Saigon, and Taipei.

It is one of the largest coordinated events for animals in the entire world. The day starts with a memorial ceremony for the billions of animals who die every year by human hands – often in the presence of real deceased animals who are mourned in public – and the reading and signing of The Declaration of Animal Rights. On this day, ethical pioneers from major cities across the world unite to remember the billions of animals subjected to deliberate cruelty and killing across the world every year. This coordinated global day of action has intensified calls for the recognition of the rights of all sentient beings to life, liberty and natural enjoyment.
International singing sensation Soumita Saha has joined the campaign for raising awareness on this day and lent her support to it. Soumita, who is also known for her social activism says “You spent hours researching reports on animal cruelty. Most of us who nurture an idea that if we abstain from just eating meat is enough, we are using products that are tested on animals too and even the moisturizer you use to keep yourself hydrated might have resulted in a dead, tortured or seriously ill animal, who was taken from their home and kept in squalid conditions just so you could have the ‘baby soft skin’”.
“Over 56 billion farmed animals are killed every year by humans. These shocking figures do not even include aquatic animals whose deaths are so great they are only measured in tonnes. This day gives a voice to all animals in order to make them free from enslavement and their rights are established and protected by law”, she adds.
Soumita, who in past had raised her voice against objectification and body shaming of women also added “I don’t think you have to be vegan or vegetarian to love animal. I too would enjoyed visits to the zoo and aquarium until I educated myself on what these poor defenseless animals go through on a daily basis for the sake of our own entertainment value and vanity. But we can definitely make a difference if we boycott brands that test on animal. I think that makes a big difference.. Be cruelty free. It is their planet too let them live”.
