Thiruvananthapuram (Kerala), Jul 06 (ANI): Authorities in Kerala’s Thiruvananthapuram began cleaning process of an 18th century man-made canal. Initially, the water in the canal was very clear but now the canal is polluted and most portions of it are not navigable. Located adjacent to the Thiruvananthapuram International Airport, the man-made Parvathi Puthanar, which was built as a water route linking the state capital to Kollam city and other regions of the state, has been suffering from encroachment and waste dumping. Dredgers were seen carrying out the phase one of the cleaning campaign which involves the excavation of weeds and other waste materials. The cleanup process is part of the National Waterway Project undertaken by Kerala Waterways and Infrastructure Development Ltd and is aimed at making the canal navigable. While, the source of waste flow will be identified and sealed, authorities will also take stringent actions against those who dump waste in the water body.
