Supreme Court to hear petitions challenging Article 35A

New Delhi, Aug 31 (ANI): Supreme Court on Friday will hear Petitions challenging Article 35A of the Constitution which grants special status to permanent residents of the Jammu and Kashmir state. The article also provides the special rights and privileges to the permanent residents of the state. Life in the state came to a standstill on August 30 due to a complete shutdown called by separatists against the legal challenge in the Supreme Court on the validity of Article 35A. Since August 1, there have been several protests in Jammu and Kashmir against any change in articles 35A and 370. State’s regional parties like National Conference and Peoples’ Democratic Party also hitting streets on the issue. Article 370 grants special status to the state, article 35A disallows people from the rest of the country from buying or owning immovable property in Jammu and Kashmir, settle permanently, or get state government jobs.
