Temple in architectural style of Sikh Golden temple in Amritsar

Amritsar (Punjab), Sept 27: This is a 700 years old temple situated in the Amritsar city of Punjab. This temple was constructed in the architectural style of Sikh shrine—the Golden temple. Popularly known as Shree Durgiana temple, the holy site built in the middle of sacred lake derives its name from Goddess Durga, the chief deity defied and worshiped here. Rebuilt in 1921 by Guru Harsai Mal Kapoor, the temple bears a distinct feature, totally different from the typical temple of ancient times. Its tomb is gilded and marble is extensively used in its features. Sometimes it is also called Silver temple because of its exquisitely designed silver doors. Dedicated to Goddess Sheetala, who is believed to be an incarnation of ‘Durga’, the temple sees a continuous flow of devotees throughout the day from various parts of the country. Today the temple situated outside the Lahore gate in Amritsar is one of the main pilgrim places in the city and is thronged by lakhs of visitor’s very year. A large part of the temple is also dedicated to Hindu deities Laxmi, the Goddess of wealth and Narayan, the Preserver of Universe and thus it is also known as Lakshmi-Narayan Temple. The idols of Lord Krishna and Radha are also enshrined here. Moreover, the complex also has some historic subsidiary temples such as Sita Mata and Bara Hanuman and is a well-known repository of Hindu scriptures. It is also believed that after coming here, people get cured of many diseases, especially poxes and sores. The temple bears a completely different look during festivals like Dussehra, Diwali and Navaratri that are celebrated with much pomp and show here. Though bhajans are sung by the devotees’ every day, right after the temple is opened in the morning and before it is closed in the evening, the jubilation is much more during the festivals. Especially during the festive season, the whole temple complex is beautifully decorated with colourful glittering lights that reflect the grandeur of the gold-plated, dome shaped sanctum sanctorum onto the pond at night, making the environment completely magical. It is this magic that has made Durgiana temple one of the main pilgrim places in Amritsar and with time its popularity has only been increasing, making it a must visit travel itinerary of Punjab.
