Kolkata sex workers celebrate Durga Puja with artwork

Sonagachi (West Bengal), Oct 10 (ANI): Sex workers of Sonagachi are joining the festivities of Hindu festival of “Durga Puja” with murals and embossed artwork. Through their marquee, the sex workers are sharing their stories and harsh prejudice they faced in their profession. From the entrance of the marquee to the main temple, where the idol of goddess Durga is placed, murals and artworks explain how these women are treated and tortured. ‘Durga Puja’ is an annual nine-day-long festival dedicated to goddess Durga, synonymous with power and feminine force. It is believed that during the festival the goddess descends on earth to rid it of demons and bless her devotees with happiness and prosperity.
