Mahalaya 2018: 79-year-old artist is making idols since last 60 years in Shillong

Shillong (Meghalaya), Oct 08 (ANI): As the conch shells and drums are set to greet Goddess Durga, idol makers are burning midnight oil to finish off the orders that they have taken for the various pandals this festive season in Shillong. On Mahalaya, the artistic hands in Shillong are busy giving final touches to the idols of Goddess Durga. One such artist is Porash Paul, who has been associated with idol making since last 60 years. He started making idols at the age of 20. 79-year-old Paul is pounding mound of clay to mix it and apply it on the straw-bound frames to create a basic shape. Now, he is the only professional idol maker present in Shillong. While some of the pandals bring some professional artist from Bengal or Guwahati, most Durga puja committee depends on Paul and his small factory of idol making. While the city has taken up a festive look, the narrow home of the idol makers looks gorgeous with the presence of the beautiful idols. It’s not a mere idol but the reflection of the thought that was brought into existence by an artist. With a week to go for the celebrations, there is a palpable sense of anticipation in the city and many odd half-finished idols wait for the idol maker’s expert touch.
