Chairman of BNF exposes Pakistan’s vested interests in Gilgit-Baltistan

Gilgit-Baltistan (PoK), Dec 11 (ANI): Gilgit-Baltistan, a huge territory, part of the erstwhile princely state of Jammu and Kashmir, has been under Pakistan’s control since 1947.Ever since the territory was illegally occupied by Pakistan, the region neither finds mention in the Constitution of the country nor does it have the independent status. Although, the region has an elected assembly but the actual powers and controls on the resources and revenues are with the Prime Minister of Pakistan. Abolishing the UN resolution on the territorial affairs of the region, Pakistan has been illegitimately administering the territory against the will of local people. Suppressive schemes suiting the whims and fancies of successive governments in Islamabad have been formulated to induce a demographic change in Gilgit-Baltistan. Tampering the ethnic composition of the region, Pakistan created anti-shia forces in Gilgit-Baltistan by facilitating outsiders to acquire land and assets; the exercise has reduced Shia population to a bare minimal in the current census. The frail political and legislative setup in Gilgit-Baltistan has often been rejected by the locals, and Pakistan has ensured no redressal be made against mammoth socio- economic problems staring the region. Pakistan having an upper hand in the administrative setup of Gilgit-Baltistan stifles reasonable voices demanding any representation among the governing bodies by employing brute military at work. Following which, the outcry of the public seldom goes past the valleys of Gilgit-Baltistan.
