9 dead after boat capsizes in Mahanadi River in Odisha

Kendrapara (Odisha), Jan 03 (ANI): Nine people lost their lives after a boat capsized in the Mahanadi River near Kendrapara district in Odisha. The death toll is said to increase as bodies are still being recovered from the river. The deceased include two women and seven children, all hailing from Hasina village in Jagatsinghpur district of the state. One child is still missing, according to survivors. As many as 55 passengers were returning after a picnic at the Light House at Hukitola Island, where they celebrated the New Year, when the mishap occurred. After receiving information about the mishap last night, fire brigade and coast guard teams reached the spot and carried out rescue operations till 3 am on Thursday. The bodies will be brought to Paradip town of Odisha in a Forest department boat. They were then sent to the hospital for post mortem. Meanwhile, Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik announced ex-gratia of Rs 4 lakh to next of kin of deceased and free medical treatment to the injured.
