Nanotech -the key to future in disease management

PATNA: Medical Council of India ( MCI) Academic Cell director Dr M Rajalakshmi on Saturday said that the use of nanotechnology in disease management has wide applications and it involves application of drugs, heat, light or other substances to specific cell types like cancer cells. 

Delivering the inaugural address at a national symposium on `Nanotechnology: Present Perspectives and Future Directions , organised by the Mahavir Cancer Sansthan and Research Centre, Dr Rajalakshmi said that nanotechnology is a relatively new area of science that has generated excitement among the scientific community worldwide. It is multidisciplinary field undergoing rapid developments, she pointed out.

She said that use of nanotechnology provides cost-effective, rapidly functioning mechanical and biological components. The emerging trends in nanoscience is expected to revolutionize areas like biotechnology, pharmaceutical industry, fabric management and waste management, she pointed out.

In his welcome address, Mahavir Cancer Sansthan director Dr J K Singh said that nanotechnology is one of the emerging field on which lots of quality of research work are based. He said that the Sansthan medical oncologists are already utilizing nano drugs in the treatment of cancer patients.

Mahavir Cancer Sansthan Research Centre head and symposium chairman Dr A Nath said that she was thankful to the department of science and technology, Government of India, for sponsoring the symposium. Nanotechnology, at present, is still unreachable to the students, she said. This symposium would not only benefit the students, but also the teachers as the talks delivered by the guest speakers would definitely increase their knowledge and encourage them to carry out research works in this particular field, Dr Nath said.

Bihar State Board of Religious Trusts chairman Kishore Kunal welcomed the guests, who had come to participate in the symposium.

Prominent among others who spoke on the occasion included Magadh University VC Arvind Kumar, Aryabhatt Knowledge University VC S N Guha, department of science and technology, Government of India, scientist Dr Praveer Asthana, Indian Association for the Cultivation of Science, Jadavpur, scientist D Chakravorty and Sansthan secretary Dr L N Ram.
