India formulates new National Policy on Electronics Manufacturing and Design

Union cabinet has  approved the National Policy on Electronics that seeks to make India a global leader in manufacturing and design of electronic products.

With an investment of around $100 billion, the new policy aims to raise the turnover of the country’s electronics sector to $400 billion by 2020. It will facilitate creation of nearly 28 million jobs at various levels.

The National Policy on Electronics 2012 has been prepared after consultation with all stakeholders.

According to an official statement released after the cabinet meeting here, a National Electronics Mission would be set up with industry participation and the Department of Information Technology renamed as Department of Electronics and Information Technology.

The policy is expected to create an indigenous manufacturing eco-system for electronics. It will foster the manufacturing of indigenously designed and manufactured chips, creating a more cyber secure ecosystem.

The new policy seeks to build a strong supply chain of raw materials, parts and electronic components to raise the indigenous availability of these inputs from the present 20-25 percent to over 60 percent by 2020.
