Bihar Tourism: Why it should be advertised?

Bihar has undisputedly huge potential for tourism. In 2012 alone over 10 Lakhs of Foreign Tourists visited Bihar alone which is much more than the states like Kerala. The total number of Tourists in Bihar is more than that of Goa. Despite all these,  Bihar hardly advertises its Tourism Sector.  I  have never seen a TV Commercial for Bihar Tourism.

States like Maharashtra, Kerala and Gujarat spend crores of rupees on advertising themselves. Even Goa has recently hired a PR firm to advertise its Tourism to ensure wide publicity of the state.

In Consumer driven market, even big and established brands like Coalgate or Coca Cola advertise constantly. They know if they don’t advertise, they may not survive.  Bihar must learn from those that its Tourism wont survive as expected if it doesnot adertise what it has got to offer.

Bihar has tough competition from almost every state of India. Though the number of Foreign Tourist is higher, the influx of Domestic Tourists in Bihar is negligible. The State needs to attract the residents of other provinces to witness the rich culture and heritage of Bihar.

Bihar needs to tell the world what it offers to them through a publicity campaign. Whatever is available here needs to be showcased in order to surpass the negativity prevalent about Bihar.

Tourism can be a very powerful source of employment and revenue generation in the state. In this perspective the efforts made by Government is not quite evident on ground level. We all know that the rich agricultural land of Bihar cannot be utilized for Industrial purposes. Hence employment oppprtunities in Bihar depends a lot on the growth of its Tourism Sector.

Bihar has something to offer to every religion. Be it Hinduism, Islam, Buddhism, Sikhism, Jainism or Christianity. This implies that Bihar can earn an handsome number of tourists by popularizing its Pilgrimage Oppostunities.

In India, Tourism alone is responsible for 33.9 Million jobs and caters to 6.4 percent of its total GDP amounting to Rs 121 Billion.

Bihar doesnot figure among top 10 states where Domestic Tourists prefer to visit, while in terms of Foreign Tourists, Bihar occupies 7 position preceded by Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan and West Bengal.
