Shamli Gangrape triggers Riot like situation in Uttar Pradesh

Shamli: A Gangrape of Minor Girl in Uttar Pradesh has taken religious tinge after it was discovered that the Victim was a minor Hindu girl and the five rapists were Muslims.

This led to clashes between the two communities and prohibitory orders have been imposed. Five BJP leaders, including legislature party leader Hukum Singh, were lathicharged and arrested. The leaders were demanding the arrest of those responsible for the gangrape of a girl on Saturday night.

DM P K Singh said that Section 144 of the CrPC, prohibiting the assembly of people, had been imposed in Shamli city since afternoon after “minor clashes” with a “communal tinge” were reported.

The Minor Girl was gangraped while travelling from Haridwar to Jind in Haryana on Saturday night. One accused has been nabbed so far.

BJP leaders Hukum Singh and Suresh Rana were sitting on dharna at the Shiv Chowk, from where they walked to the Dhimanpura railway crossing when some mischievous elements among them indulged in arson and set a shop ablaze.

Meanwhile, in thw words of Rana, while they were protesting, a police team led by SP Abdul Hameed lathi-charged them. Many workers including Singh and himself were injured, Rana said.

Pointing out how the Uttar Pradesh Police on a social network site had called rioters in Shamli agitating against rape of a minor girl as a ‘Hindu girl’, BJP state spokesman Vijay Bahadur Pathak said the fact that the UP government was trying to label rape victims on religious lines was very disturbing.
