IMG and Reliance launch Indian Super League for Football

The first Season of IPL Styled Indian Super League for Football would begin in January 2014 and would continue till March.  It is being organized jointly by Reliance and New York based International Management Group (IMG). The 3 month long tournament would feature eight teams with marquee players from across the world .

The Tournament would foster local talent and feature international stars as well as domestic players.

“Football, with its largely untapped potential in the country, has the opportunity to grow to an unrivalled commercial success quite unlike any other sport. We hope the growing football footprint will pave the way for the nation’s sporting renaissance,” IMG-Reliance chairperson Nita Ambani said.

Several International Players like Dwight Yorke, Fredrik Ljungberg, Robert Pires, Louis Saha and Hernan Crespo have been signed up for the tournament.

Legendary Football Players like Peter Schmeichel and Marcel Desailly have also been associated with the league as Coach.

ISL would have 9 teams viz. Mumbai, Kolkata, Chennai, Delhi, Guwahati, Bangalore, Kochi, Goa and Pune. The Auction to buy a franchisee would be held in November and the base price of a franchise is expected  to be around Rs 25 crore.

Several Big Corporate and Bollywood Players have shown interest in buying the team. Reports are that Shahrukh Khan, Ranbir Kapoor, John Abraham/MS Dhoni, Sourav Ganguly, Abhishek Bachchan would consider owning a franchise.

Owners of Several IPL Teams including Kalanidhi and Dayanidhi Maran (Hyderabad Sunrisers), GMR Group (Delhi Daredevils) and Emerging Media (Rajasthan Royals) are expected to take part in the bidding process next month.

The Broadcasting Rights have been sold to Star TV for 10 years.
