Serena Williams declared WTA Player of the Year for 5th Time

32 year Old American Tennis Player, Serena Williams has been chosen as the WTA Player of the Year for the second consecutive year. Earlier she had been awarded the same in 2002, 2008, 2009 and 2012.

WTA Awards given by the Women’s Tennis Association to players who have done or achieved something remarkable during the season or their career.

She won 78 of 82 matches, the U.S. Open and French Open among 11 titles, and a record $12,385,572 in prize money.

Williams’ 11 titles (including the French Open and U.S. Open) are the most since Martina Hingis won 12 in 1997, and her 78 victories (against four losses) are the most since Kim Clijsters won 90 a decade ago.

She had also won Doubles Team of the Year award in 2000 and 2009 in partnership with her Sister Venus Williams. The duo also won Fan Favorite Doubles Team of the Year 2009, 2010 and 2012.

She was awarded Comeback Player of the Year in 2004 and the Most improved Player in 1998 and 2004.

This year, the pair of Sara Errani and Roberta Vinci, both from Italy have been declared as Doubles Team of the Year (2013), while Simona Halep from Romania has been crowned as Most Improved Player. Eugenie Bouchard of Canada is the most improved Player of the Year, while Alisa Kleybanova of Russia is the Comeback Player of the Year.
