Coal Production rises by 19 percent in 5 years

Coal India Ltd has taken a series of steps to increase coal production in various coal fields under it. These include, follow up on Environment & Forestry clearances and with the Ministry of Railways for making available rail rakes, approaching State Government for necessary assistance in land acquisition and dealing with law and order problems, regular monitoring of production in existing mines and implementation of ongoing and new projects.

According to Minister of State for Coal,  Pratik Prakash Bapu Patil, the Coal production from Coal India Limited increased from 379.46 million tonnes in 2007-08, (terminal year of XI th Five Year Plan) to 452.19 million tonnes in 2012-13 (terminal year of the XII th Plan). The 5 year gap saw an average increase of 19% in Coal Production.

The Minister said that the main reasons for not achieving the targets include;

 

  • Delay in forestry clearances, environment clearance etc;
  • Delay in land acquisition and R & R related issues;
  • Adverse law & order conditions in some of the mining areas;
  • Transportation constraints in moving coal from pithead to sidings and delay in construction of rail Infrastructures in some of the major coalfields;
