Student from Arunachal Pradesh beaten to Death in New Delhi

New Delhi: A 20 year-old student from Arunachal Pradesh was allegedly severely assaulted by shopkeepers in Delhi and died January 30 according to Police.

Nido Taniam died of his injuries while being treated at a hospital. He was beaten up Wednesday.

Police said they are questioning the shopkeepers in the capital’s Lajpat Nagar-I area, where the incident took place.

Speaking to the media, Taniam’s cousin said he saw an injury mark on his neck and his lips were torn.

“Taniam’s body has been taken to the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS). The family has been informed. As they won’t be able to come here, we will take the body back home,” Taniam’s cousin said.

The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) Friday put the onus of the death of a student from Arunachal Pradesh on Delhi police.

“The way police picked him up and then again dropped him to the same spot needs to be looked into,” AAP spokesperson Dilip Pandey said.

“The way lawlessness is prevailing in the state needs to be checked and Delhi police will have to take the responsibility to stop such incidents,” he said.

“AAP is hurt and saddened by this news, we aren’t endorsing this incident,” Pandey added

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) also condemned the death.

“The death of a northeast student in New Delhi after being beaten up is barbaric and condemnable,” BJP leader Arun Jaitley said in a comment on Twitter.

“Such incidents do not help us as a nation,” he said.
