Iraq launches attack to retake Tikrit from Islamic State

Militant strongholds north of Baghdad were attacked, Monday… part of a huge Iraqi offensive to retake the city of Tikrit and the surrounding province of Salahuddin.

Iraqi army and medical officials say at least 16 of the advancing troops: five soldiers; and 11 militia fighters, were killed by gunfire and roadside bombs.

And commanders say they are well aware of the dangers:

This battle will be tough and ferocious because of the nature of the area and also because of the plans that are set to besiege the enemy, denying Daesh fighters any chance to flee.

Steadily advancing toward Tikrit, they’re facing heavy opposition from Islamic State fighters who have had months to dig in and stake their claim.
