India’s 1st Maruti 800 Car lies unattended, orphan with none to take care of it

New Delhi: India’s first “people’s car”, the Maruti 800, is lying unattended at Green Park in New Delhi.

With the death of its owners, the Sikh couple who instantly rose to fame after they got keys of the car from the then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, chorus has been growing for its preservation.

The car, which is parked outside the locked house of Harpal Singh and Gulshan Beer Kaur, has no takers. Singh died in 2010 and his wife, two years later.

His two daughters who live in South Delhi area with their families are not able to maintain the car. The family members, who are emotionally attached with the car, don’t want it to rust down.

They want that the prized trophy should be kept in a museum for the future generations. Son-in- law of Harpal Singh, Tejinder Ahluwalia, has appealed to the makers of the car to preserve it.
