Transgender Rights Bill: Rajya Sabha passes Private member’s Bill after 46 Years

New Delhi: The Rajya Sabha on Friday passed The Rights of Transgender Persons Bill 2014 with members from across the political spectrum joining hands to demand that the government take steps to bring the transgender community, facing social stigma and ostracism, into the mainstream.

The bill, moved by DMK member Tiruchi Siva, is the first private members bill to be passed in 46 years. The bill will now go to Lok Sabha where it will be debated and put to vote.
