Shoppers flock to markets to prepare for Ramadan in UP

Kanpur/ Varanasi/ Moradabad, June 17 (ANI): Muslims across Uttar Pradesh thronged markets in preparation of the holy month of Ramadan which begins later this week. Ramadan, the ninth month of the Hijri lunar calendar, commemorates the revelation of Koran, Islam’s holy book, and has traditionally been a time of religious fervour, settling old disputes and behaving charitably towards neighbours. Muslims scan the sky at night in search of the new moon to determine the start of Ramadan, the holiest month for the Muslim community, during which observant believers fast from dawn to dusk. As per reports, the holy month begins on Thursday (June 18), but all will depend on the sighting of a new moon. In Varanasi, market places were bustled with people eager to buy new clothes, skullcaps, traditional Ramadan sweets and prayer material.
