Yakub Memon hanged to death in Nagpur Central jail

Nagpur/ Mumbai, July 30 (ANI): The accused in 1993 Mumbai blasts, Yakub Memon was hanged to death on Thursday morning in Nagpur Central jail after all his mercy pleas were dismissed by the highest court. For the first time ever, the top court was opened up in the middle of the night. Three judges heard a last-minute petition that said Memon cannot be executed for at least a week after his mercy plea is rejected. Memon was reportedly allowed to meet his family members before his execution at 6:19 in the morning. Meanwhile, security was tightened outside his residence in Mumbai’s Mahim area. President Pranab Mukherjee had earlier rejected Yakub Memon’s mercy plea. The Supreme Court had also rejected his petition on his death warrant. The apex court had earlier also dismissed the curative petition of Yakub, saying proper procedure was followed in disposing of Yakub’s curative petition.
