UNP leader salutes mandate, says verdict heralds “new-era” in Sri Lanka

Colombo, Aug 19 (ANI): Saluting the electoral mandate in their favour, a senior leader of Ranil Wickremesinghe-led United National Party (UNP) said that the verdict heralds a new-era for Sri Lanka. The ruling UNP has won decisive gains in a general election, final results showed, putting it in a position to form a stable government after eight months of minority rule. UNP leader Patali Champika Ranawaka said that the UNP would form the next government. Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe’s center-right party won 106 seats, seven short of a clear majority, election officials said. Still, he should be able to control parliament with the support of allies of President Maithripala Sirisena. The opposition alliance led by ex-president Mahinda Rajapaksa mustered 95 seats as its attempt to stage a comeback came up short.
