Jaitley urges Congress to reconsider suggestion on tax reforms

New Delhi, Nov 25 (ANI): Finance Minister, Arun Jaitley, urged opposition Congress party to reconsider some of its suggestions to the Goods and Services Tax (GST) bill and support it in Parliament. In September, the government dropped a plan to reconvene Parliament to secure approval for a goods and services tax because it lacks political support, in a new setback to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s faltering plans to revamp the economy. Jaitley said he was willing to discuss with the Congress leaders to address their grievances because flawed GST would be harmful to the tax system. The GST would replace an array of state and central levies and transform India into a more uniform market. Economists estimate it could add up to 2 percentage points to gross domestic product. In Singapore, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi said his government was hopeful of rolling out the contentious Goods and Services Tax (GST) in 2016.
