US envoy lays foundation for first ‘bio’ toilet in Uttarakhand

Rishikesh, Nov 25 (ANI): US ambassador to India, Richard Verma, laid the first brick for a bio-toilet in a girls’ school in Uttarakhand. Verma, who arrived with his family at the school in Rishikesh town, said the initative was directly linked with girls’ educational progress, their quality of life and the environment. Verma and his family interacted with the students, distributed apples to them. The initiative is aimed at boosting girls’ education in India. Various studies have shown that a large number of girls leave school due to lack of toilet in their premises.Less than a third of India’s 1.2 billion people have access to sanitation and more than 186,000 children under five die every year from diarrhoeal diseases caused by unsafe water and poor sanitation, according to the charity WaterAid. Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s has made building toilets a priority and he has pledged that every household will have a toilet by 2019.
